Final Newsletter6/12/2023 What a Great Year!Thank you families for all of your support this year! This class worked together really well and was a lot of fun! Our last day included special class-favorite activities written on notes inside of balloons that we popped during the day. We could barely fit in everything that we wanted to do! The day went by so quickly! This week, we made small books of appreciations for each other and the notes were very sweet. I hope that your child will share it with you. They each have a lot to be proud of! ChromebooksChromebooks and chargers went home for the summer. Students also brought home their 'Clever badges' (QR code) to sign in. Their QR codes have also been taped into their homework agendas. Please send me an email if you have trouble logging in! Summer SuggestionsReading Be sure to keep reading every day! Bring a book to read if you travel or enjoy reading at home. Here is a suggested reading list for students going into 4th grade. Math Over the summer, students have access to all of the sites that we used in class on their chromebooks. Definitely stay sharp on those math facts with some games at ellicott3.weebly.com or learn something new on Dreambox. Class PhotosThis week and next, as I wrap up things here in the classroom, I'll send out a link on Remind to an album of photos from this year. Have a great summer!!

Here's a LINK TO SOME MATH GAMES
Any students wishing to take home Chromebooks for extra math practice on DreamBox are more than welcome to. I've really been enjoying this site this year because I can individually assign games that I want your student to work on for review, practice, or enrichment.
Science
In science, we learned all about climates around the world. We had fun building and testing three styles of roofs- thatched, clay, and wood-- to see which would work best in a wet climate. MORE SCIENCE PHOTOS |
Social Studies
We are learning all about Brazil! If any families happen to have any special connections to or knowledge about Brazil feel free to reach out to me.

Language Arts
Our class has been busy reading biographies. We've learned to look for:
We've been practicing a way of summarizing that uses this phrasing:
Somebody... wanted... But.... So... Then...
An example of this would be:
Dr. Suess wanted to publish children's books. But no one wanted to print his books. So, he kept asking other places to publish his books. Then, Random House published Cat in the Hat and he became a famous author.
Each student has also selected one person to tell the whole class about using a Google Slideshow.
Ask your child who they chose to read about!
Our next unit will be Mysteries!
How you can help at home: After your child completes their daily reading, ask them to summarize what they read using Somebody... wanted... But.... So... Then...
- details that tell us what people really want (motivation)
- obstacles that people face
- accomplishments

Math
We're finishing up our unit about addition and subtraction strategies. There are several math games in our Google Classroom found under the topic "Do This Today" that your child can show you how to play if you are looking for additional practice. Games include: Close to 100, Capture 5, How Far From 100.
Below are links to a few videos to show you strategies that you may see your child using.

Social Studies
We learned about the Geography, Economy, Government, Symbols, and Culture of the United States. Over the next months, we will learn about Brazil, China, and Kenya. Along the way, we'll be comparing and contrasting these countries with each other.
Science
Our current science unit explores Weather and Climate. We've started by learning about four weather instruments-- thermometer, anemometer, rain gauge, and wind vane.
Chromebooks at Home
Dreambox is a great site for math practice that's responsive, adapting to each student as they play.
Enjoy the long weekend!

Chromebooks
I've started allowing students to bring home Chromebooks with the understanding that they are for school work and they must bring them back to school the next day. I don't have easy access to any loaners if students forget. Also, I don't have chargers to send home.
They can access and explore many sites through their Clever accounts. Preferred sites for practice are:

Spelling Lists
Our class has four different spelling groups. Please ask your child which group they are in. All of these lists fall within the range of a typical third grader. Here's a link to lists 1-4 below. We'll have spelling quizzes every two weeks. First quiz: List #1, October 14. The intention is to practice spelling and give students the experience of studying and taking a quiz. I'll post new lists after Thanksgiving break.
Play 60 Program - You should be seeing a Play 60 Calendar coming home with the HW agenda. Please see letter below.
Live Online Read Aloud
This week, our class watched NBA star Stephen Curry read live from his new book "I Have a Superpower." He talked about the importance of being yourself, practicing, and maintaining a positive mindset. Unfortunately, we also had a fire drill during the event so we missed some of it! The class enjoyed watching a video of him practicing where he made over 100 3 pointers in a row! |

Thank you students and families for a fantastic start to the school year!
In Language Arts, we're practicing our routines for reading--- choosing good books, maintaining focus, jotting our thoughts as we read, keeping a reading notebook, and sharing with partners. Thank you for making sure that your student is completing 20+ minutes of reading at home each night as best as you can. Please let me know if you need any additional support with this.
We have not started spelling groups yet.
Math has included an introduction to multiplication. At this point in the year, we are thinking of multiplication as repeated addition. (Ex. 6 x 3 is 6+6+6) We have also been practicing skip-counting by 2's, 3's, 5's and 10's.
In Social Studies, we have been researching continents together. When we finish this unit, we will switch to our Science unit Forces and Motion.
