Newsletter4/30/2021 Students had a lot of fun welcoming our 4th and 5th graders back full time with Spirit Days this past week. Math- 3rd Grade State Test is Thursday, May 6 Students are only taking Session 1 of the test which is all multiple choice. We've been reviewing some released questions from past years together in class and for homework. Science We just finished learning about weather and the climate zones of the earth. This included a fantastic virtual field trip through the Buffalo Museum of Science that the students really enjoyed. In class, we looked at some instruments used to measure weather-- rain gauge, thermometer, anemometer, weather vane-- and collected data online about the weather in our area. Unfortunately, we've been able to make a lot of first-hand observations about cloud cover lately! Virtual Book Fair The Ellicott Book Fair is online this year. A flyer went home today and here is the same information below: Have a great weekend!

Addition Strategies: Here's a video explaining four strategies that you might see students use when adding. Some students are also using the standard algorithm, but it's not a strategy that they need to entirely understand at this time.
Virtual Field Trip
The Buffalo Science Museum is providing our class with a virtual field trip about weather on April 13.

Readers Workshop Our current Read Aloud is Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. We are learning to think more deeply about characters and how to give examples from the book that support our ideas. Here's an example of how students are learning to write about characters: Writing About Characters |
Readers Workshop Videos for Families
Here are some good resources for families looking for ways to support reading at home. Topics include study habits, book recommendations, writing, etc.
Math
We are practicing our multiplication facts and learning patterns that occur when multiplying by 10.
Ex. 3 x 7 = 21 30 x 7 = 210
Ex. 3 x 7 = 21 30 x 7 = 210
Chromebooks
I've been allowing students to take home their Chromebooks lately on the off-chance that a snow day is called. If a 'snow day' is called students will be provided assignments to complete at home on their Chromebooks. I will send out a Remind with any necessary info at that time.
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!

Monday is 11:30 Dismissal
Today, several students were concerned about what to do if we need to move to remote schooling. If this happens, I told students to log onto their Google Classroom by 9:20am and start the morning as usual. I will have instructions for them in their regular Morning Work slides. We'll go from there and do the best that we can.
Important! Help lighten the load in your child's backpack.
Now that Chromebooks are going back and forth to school, I want students to be conscious about keeping clutter and extra weight out of their backpacks.
Items in backpack:
1) agenda
2) Chromebook
3) water bottle (we have a touchless refill station in the hall, these can come to school empty to reduce weight and avoid spilling)
4) lunch
5) gloves/hat if necessary
Please don't bring library books back and forth to school everyday. Keep them at home. Return them to school as you finish. Keep any toys, masonry repair supplies, and other extra items at home. If there are any questions, please let me know.
